The New Jersey State Employment Service is the state's primary labor exchange. We are dedicated to helping employers to meet their human resources needs and job seekers to find jobs suitable to their qualifications. The Employment Service comprises a statewide network of full service local offices. Employment Service applicants range from experienced, skilled professionals with post-graduate degrees to unskilled labor. Employers who rely on the Employment Service for applicants range from Fortune 500 corporations to entrepreneurs in business for themselves. The ES offers a variety of programs that help job seekers and employers.

America's Talent Bank, an online system that makes it possible for even those with no computer knowledge to create resumes which are available to employers worldwide.

America's Job Bank, a partnership between the US Department of Labor and the state-operated public Employment Service. Its computerized network links state Employment Service offices to provide job seekers with the largest pool of active job opportunities available anywhere and nationwide exposure for their resumes. For employers it provides rapid, national exposure for job openings and an easily accessible pool of candidates.

Job Referral and Placement, the process of selecting qualified job seekers to apply for job openings listed by employers.

Veterans' Services, preferential referral to all ES services and veterans' supportive services.

Job Development, the process of developing an opening where there is no current opening listed.

Career Counseling, to define and solve problems of occupational choice, change, or adjustment. Labor market information is provided to help in preparing an Employability Development Plan which outlines the steps to be followed to reach employment goals.

Testing Services, occupational aptitude tests, work sample exercises, interest inventories, or specific occupational selection tests.

Referral to Supportive Services, such as the Workforce New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS), county or municipal public assistance, Social Security, Literacy Plus, and community-based agencies for job seekers whose needs extend beyond the scope of the Employment Service.

Referral to Training, following evaluation of job seekers' needs and skills, if appropriate.

Workforce Development Program (WDP), a state-funded training program that provides vocational training grants to displaced workers and employers for individuals to acquire skills in demand occupations. Additional Unemployment Benefits while in Training (ABT) is also administered through WDP.

Job Search Workshops, group sessions that deal with how to plan a work search. They include how to make employer contacts, how to develop an employability plan, etc.

Resume Writing Workshops, to teach how to develop a resume that best represents your skills and abilities. Cover letters and broadcast letters augment the actual resume.

Labor Market Information, data on current labor conditions in a specific region, including employment trends, economic developments, and unemployment rates.

The Professional Services Group (PSG) & Job Clubs, self-help organizations for persons seeking employment through networking. Computers, phones, fax machines, copiers, and reference and resource materials are available.

Private Agency Agreements, contractual agreements between ES and 300+ private employment agencies to list job openings with the Employment Service.

Response Team Services, on site sessions at which workers being displaced are informed of services available through the Department of Labor and the One-Stop Career System.

Trade Adjustment Act (TAA), providing federally funded training for displaced workers whose job loss was due to the import of foreign goods.

Alien Labor Certification (ALC), to test the availability of U.S. workers for jobs, prior to certification of alien labor.

Project Re-employment Opportunities System (PROS), selection by computer profiling of unemployment claimants to receive intensive re-employment services.

WOTC (Work Opportunity Tax Credit), a federal tax credit program for employers hiring members of certain targeted groups.

  • TANF, employability enhancement services for members of needy families receiving temporary assistance.
  • GA, employability enhancement services for recipients of General Assistance (municipal assistance).
  • FSETP (Food Stamp Employment & Training Program), employability enhancement services for Food Stamp recipients.
